In 2021, the global shipbuilding market saw a total of 1,855 new ship orders with 119.85 million deadweight tons. In terms of tonnage, the market share of transport ships powered by green fuel (excluding self-fueled LNG carriers, gas ships/liquid cargo ships, etc.) is 23.5%.
The current transformation direction of marine power includes LNG power, LPG power, methanol power, biofuel power, hydrogen fuel power, ammonia fuel power, battery power, etc. At present, LNG and LPG technologies are highly mature and have begun to be widely commercialized. It is expected that they will have broad application prospects in the short term. Methanol fuel has the characteristics of zero carbon dioxide emissions, but has problems such as low global output and low energy density. Its use in the shipping field Applications are expected to remain limited until 2025; biofuel itself cannot reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which will become a constraint in its application in marine power; hydrogen fuel is clean and has abundant global reserves, currently attracting a large amount of investment, and hydrogen fuel cells In terms of application, it is more efficient than traditional internal combustion engines. However, in terms of technological maturity, it is expected that hydrogen fuel will still be difficult to meet commercial requirements in the short term. At the same time, its high price, shortage of infrastructure, and difficulty in storage will also limit its use in marine power. Short-term application prospects; ammonia fuel can currently be produced and traded on a large scale. However, ammonia fuel itself is toxic and corrosive, has low energy density, and the current production process consumes high energy. Its short-term application prospects in ship power are still relatively limited. In terms of battery power, it is currently used on small ships, and its scope of application is expanding. However, considering that battery power technology is currently not suitable for larger ships and long-distance voyages, its application prospects in large ocean-going ships are still unclear. .
In recent years, Qingdao’s shipping and supporting companies have continued to make breakthroughs in the application of green fuel power for ships. Beihai Shipbuilding undertook an order for dual-fuel bulk carriers for the first time. China Marine Diesel delivered a series of green fuel main engines including the world's first WinGD 7X82DF dual-fuel main engine. Qingdao Shuangrui signed its first order for the LNG gas supply system independently developed by Qingdao Shuangrui. Recently, the methanol fuel supply systems of Qingdao Shuangrui and Qingdao Headway have obtained principle approval certificates from LR Classification Society and RINA Classification Society respectively. In the next step, the Municipal Industry and Information Technology Bureau will actively push relevant policies to enterprises, provide targeted services, support enterprises in seizing market opportunities, and increase research and development of new products.
